Understanding the Intention (Niyyah) for Umrah
Making the intention, known as Niyyah (Arabic: نِيَّة), is an essential prerequisite before starting the rituals of Umrah. It is the conscious decision in your heart that distinguishes this act of worship from everyday actions and clarifies that you are performing Umrah specifically.
Key Points about Niyyah for Umrah:
- From the Heart: The Niyyah is fundamentally an intention made within your heart. It does not strictly need to be spoken aloud.
- Verbal Intention (Recommended): While the heart’s intention is primary, many scholars recommend (consider it mustahabb) to also state the intention verbally. This helps reinforce the commitment. You can say it in Arabic or your native language.
- Timing and Location: The Niyyah for Umrah must be made at or just before crossing the designated boundary point called the Miqat. This is done after you have put on your Ihram garments.
How to Make the Intention for Umrah:
Once you are ready at the Miqat in your Ihram, you should make the firm intention in your heart to perform Umrah for the sake of Allah.
If you choose to make a verbal intention, here are common examples:
Option 1 (Most Common):
Arabic: لَبَّيْكَ اَللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَةً
Transliteration: Labbayka Allāhumma ʿUmrah.
Meaning: O Allah, here I am to perform Umrah.
Option 2:
Arabic: اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ الْعُمْرَةَ
Transliteration: Allāhumma innī urīdu l-ʿUmrah.
Meaning: O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah.
Option 3 (Includes a Supplication):
Arabic: اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُرِيدُ الْعُمْرَةَ فَيَسِّرْهَا لِي وَتَقَبَّلْهَا مِنِّي
Transliteration: Allāhumma innī urīdu l-ʿUmrata fa yassirhā lī wa taqabbalhā minnī.
Meaning: O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah, so make it easy for me and accept it from me.
After making the Niyyah, you enter the state of Ihram fully and should begin reciting the Talbiyah (
Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk…). Remember, the sincerity of the intention in your heart is the most crucial aspect.
